Diverticulosis and Acute Diverticulitis

Description

Diverticula are small bags appearing on the wall of the large intestine normally by the sigmoid colon. Although their origin is uncertain, it has been related to diets with little fiber.
When diverticula are infected it causes diverticulitis, which is a disease that requires urgent medical assistance. Diverticulitis may be from mild when the patient recovers with drug treatment at home, to acute or serious when it is necessary to perform surgery urgently.

Symptoms

Although in most cases they are asymptomatic, diverticula may cause serious rectal bleeding. Moreover, acute diverticulitis causes pain on the left and lower side of the abdomen, discomfort and fever. In serious cases it may cause peritonitis (abdominal infection).

Treatment

When serious bleeding is caused or after two episodes of mild diverticulitis, surgery is recommended. The intervention consists on removing the part of the colon with the diverticula and joining the end of the intestine which is normally done with laparoscopy.

Nevertheless, surgery to treat diverticulitis varies depending on its seriousness and may consist in draining an abscess (removing pus and blood), resecting part of the colon (removing) until performing a temporary colostomy (take out a part of the colon through the wall of the abdomen so stools go to a bag adhered to the body).
